Wheat, rye, barley, spelt. These grains all include gluten. In fact, a variety of food such as bread, pastries, pasta or pizza are made with wheat flour and therefor contain the protein. Yet, more than 500,000 people in Spain are not able to enjoy these foods easily, as they suffer from celiac disease. Celiac is chronic autoimmune disease, where affected people get symptoms like stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, tiredness or even joint pain after they ate food containing gluten.
In 2025, celiac was recognised as an official chronic disease in Spain, which provides more visibility for the carriers of it. And as hundreds of thousands of people can not tolerate gluten, Spain is considered a very gluten-free-friendly country. Expats will also find a large selection of gluten free spots in Málaga.
