Life Lungs?
In order to tackle climate change effects, Malaga has become a crucial city in the Life Lungs Project. This project aims to make Lisbon resilient to rising temperatures and mitigate the effects of water scarcity and heat waves. Based in Lisbon and in line with the municipalities climate policies, this project aims to lessen climate change effects. It’s implementation runs from September 2019 to August 2024.
Expected results includes increased carbon sequestration, use of flock of sheep to control vegetation in meadows, etc. On the other hand, their objectives are mainly to promote awareness, build capacity, and reduce energy consumption. Additionally, they wish to adapt the urban green infrastructure in case of extreme precipitation events.
What does Malaga have to do with this project?
Malaga City Council is currently collaborating with the Life Lung Project to enhance biodiversity and climate adaptation measures. This initiative in Malaga has gained support from the Environmental Sustainability Department, the Municipal Urban Planning Authority, and the EU Funds Department. The main goal of this project in Malaga is to create green spaces throughout the city.
The concept of the project itself comes from the notion of green spaces, which act as the main organs for urban environments. Lungs in humans sustain their lives and keep their bodies in check, right? That’s exactly the aim here but with the environment instead. Malaga is already struggling with drought due to the constant warm temperatures. With this project, the impact of climate change, like extreme weather events and rising temperatures, can be reduced.
Although this project was set off in Lisbon, Portugal, their collaboration with cities like Malaga is beneficial. As their objectives includes raising awareness about this issue, collaborating with their neighboring country helps. Moreover, shared resources and knowledge will aid in establishing a model for sustainable urban development.
This collaboration brings hopes to many other countries struggling with the challenging effects of climate change. Malaga being a pilot city for this project despite the climate struggles that it experiences inspires other countries from all over the world. By creating green spaces in this super crowded city, communities can breathe new life into the environment. Furthermore, these green spaces shall promote health and wellbeing both of the environment and its people.
