Navigating Malaga: A guide to all you need to know about transportation

Malaga’s well-connected public transportation network makes it convenient to travel the city with a breeze. From the touristy city center to the farther-away, calming neighborhood, travelling within Malaga has never been more affordable. Read along as we provide a guide to all you need to know about transportation in Malaga, including invaluable tips.

Bus Services

The Malaga public transportation system is recognizable by its EMT logo and blue colour. With a cost of €1,40  per ride, these buses can drive you around Malaga from early morning until late at night. If you use the bus a lot, we recommend getting a Bonobus card that costs €0.85 per ride. This card can be shared with other people or used for multiple journeys within an hour. Malaga also has specialized routes for buses. Routes include Malaga Airport bus A, Flea Market bus 64, Fair bus F and Botanical Garden bus 91.

Bicycle Rentals

Bicycle rentals are the best option for eco-friendly commuters or adrenaline-driven adventurers. A bike station called Malaga Bici provides a sustainable and convenient way of traveling throughout Malaga. Malaga Bici offers bike rental service with pick-up points until 11pm and drop-off points open 24/7 across the city. If you are renting for a short trip or workout, you might not have to pay, as the first 30 minutes are free.

Metros

Since the metro operates every 6–10 minutes throughout the day, the metro is the cheapest way to go around Malaga. It only has two lines running. Line 1 passes through essential routes like the University of Malaga and the hospital. Line 2 has notable tourist stops like the sports arena and the beach.

Trains

While buses and metros drive you around the city, trains can take you a little further to the neighbouring cities and gems. At the Estación de Málaga Maria Zambrano, you have the option to book a local, intercity or fast speed train. Trains C1 and C2 extend connections to Fuengirola, Alora and the airport. Ticket prices vary depending on the zones you traverse. In order to make you use the train more often, discounts are provided for groups, students and frequent travellers.

Navigating Malaga can be done in multiple ways. From cheap options like buses and metros to personalised travel experiences like taxis, exploring Malaga is undemanding. Note that you could always buy tickets online, at the stations or contactless in the bus. Cash is also an option for buses but don’t bring big bills as the drivers often don’t have change.
