See the City from Above: The Most Stunning Viewpoints in and around Málaga

From Gibralfaro you have a great view on Málaga.

Ever wondered what Málaga looks like from above? The city and its surroundings offer plenty of viewpoints that open up breathtaking perspectives over the coastline, the mountains, and the urban landscape. Some of them are easy to reach and perfect for a spontaneous sunset stop, while others require a bit of hiking effort—but reward you with unforgettable views that make every step worth it.

Gibralfaro

The Castillo de Gibralfaro is not only one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, but also home to one of the best viewpoints in Málaga.
If you start your walk from Plaza de la Merced, head towards Calle Mundo Nuevo. Passing the small restaurants, you’ll find a narrow path that leads uphill. Already after just a few minutes of walking, the city begins to open up beneath you, offering stunning views over Málaga’s rooftops and the sea in the distance. The higher you go, the more spectacular the panorama becomes. To avoid crowds, it’s often best not to climb all the way to the top.

Especially at sunset, this spot is truly magical: golden light over the city, the harbour glowing in the distance, and a calm atmosphere that makes it one of the easiest and most rewarding viewpoints to reach, even if you don’t have much time or energy for a longer hike.

Monte Victoria

Also very close to the city centre, Monte Victoria is a slightly more adventurous but absolutely rewarding hike.

You can begin your route from Calle Victoria, continue towards Calle Ferrándiz, and then make your way up via Subida San Cristóbal. After around 30 minutes of walking uphill, you reach the summit, where a wide and impressive view over Málaga opens up in front of you.

The climb can feel a bit intense at times, but it is manageable even without advanced hiking experience. Once at the top, it’s the perfect place to take a break. Sit down and simply enjoy the view while letting your thoughts settle. For the way back, you can choose a different route through the forest. You will be passing the power station and following the paths down through the greenery.

My personal highlight – Lake viewpoint near the Botanical Garden

One of the most impressive and peaceful views near Málaga can be found close to the Jardín Botánico-Histórico La Concepción. This area offers a hidden gem that combines nature, water, and panoramic city views—but it requires a longer hike around the nearby lake.

To get there, take bus 20 to San José. From there, walk up towards the botanical garden and continue through the tunnel. Instead of turning left towards the garden after the tunnel, turn right and follow the road until you reach a picnic area. This is where the hike begins.

From here, you follow the footpath around the lake for about three hours. Along the way you are rewarded with some of the most stunning views over Málaga and its natural surroundings. The route is scenic but also demanding in parts, as the path can be steep and uneven. Good hiking shoes—or at least sturdy trainers—are highly recommended to fully enjoy the experience safely.
