With the increase of British tourists in Spain, talks are about introducing new flight routes to Spain. These routes will be from various regional airports of the UK with a destination of Spain’s Costa de la Luz. In 2019, when the demise of renowned tour operator Thomas Cook happened, Cadiz saw a decrease in British tourists. Now, with this new opportunity, the province of Cadiz is all excited and ready to catch the attention of British tourists once again.
Jerez Airport, an airport that is located around 40 km from Cadiz, will play an important role in this initiative. The central topic of discussion in this initiative is about hosting charter flights that are operated by big British airlines. The aim is to revive tourism flow while also creating important flight links to Cadiz. Moreover, Almeria, a city in southeast Spain, had seen similar success in the past with such an initiative from Jet2.com. For five years in a row, Almeria kept seeing a surge in British tourists visiting the city.
British tourists dominating the tourism market?
Although British tourism has decreased in Cadiz, it was historically never dominated by British tourists. However, with these upcoming plans, the aim is to actually dominate this province’s tourism. Last November, Germán Beardo, the provincial delegate for tourism, initiated talks about this initiative during the UK tourism trade fair.
Beardo shares that they wish to attract culture-loving, family-oriented and affluent travelers with this project. Travelers in this category not only bring prosperity but they also contribute to the creation of quality jobs in Cadiz province. With full-on efforts to secure Cadiz as a destination for airline operators, results are expected by February 2025. This project will also pave the way for a direct route between Jerez airport and several UK regional airports.
The British media is playing a crucial role in promoting the province of Cadiz in their country. The Daily Mail and Daily Express have been sharing posts showcasing the charm of the province and its little neighbourhoods. Their efforts help attract British tourists who seek the authentic Spanish experience away from overcrowded cities.
Overall, in the two previous years, Cadiz had seen quite some improvement in the resurge of British tourists. 2022 had welcomed double the tourists from 2021 in their hotel stays. Such an improvement gave the province hope and they are looking forward to even more success with the results of this project.
