Great news for all the savvy and on budget shoppers out there. OCU, Spain’s top consumer organization, did a major national study a few months ago. OCU visited 1180 stores across 65 cities in Spain. One of those cities was Malaga, so here are the affordable supermarkets in Malaga and its surroundings.
Cheapest supermarkets
Topping the charts, we have Cash Fresh Teatinos at Avenida Jorge Luis Borges 11. A discounted supermarket located around 15 minutes away from Malaga Center by car. Cash Fresh scored 109 points on the study. Keep in mind that the lowest the score, the better, according to OCU.
Right next to this store, you have Saymu, which has 110 points and is located 17 minutes away by car and half an hour away by public transportation. This Saymu, in particular, is located at Avenida Ortega y Gasset 295.
The study also revealed Mercadona to be next to Saymu. Even though, according to some locals, Mercadona is on the expensive side, this one in particular is more affordable and outside the city. Mercadona at Calle El Califa 1 in Marbella scored 111 points, making it the third-cheapest supermarket in Malaga. As it is located in Marbella, it takes approximately 50 minutes to drive. But trying it out wouldn’t hurt, right? You might pay extra for fuel, but what if the products are much cheaper there? As they say, a win is a win.
The big spenders
On the flip side, you get El Corte Inglés supermarket in Puerto Banús. Located at Carretera de Cádiz, this supermarket scored the highest at 132 points, while the maximum points of the study are 244 points. Supercor scored 130 points, right behind El Corte Inglés. You can find this store at Calle Camilo José Cela s/n in Malaga City.
Supercor at Avenida de las Caballerizas s/n and Carrefour Express on Calle Cuarteles both accumulated 127 points. Covirán 10 supermarket on Calle Orson Welles and Covirán Luque on Calle Lope de Rueda are also two stores that scored the same points at 125.
Conclusion of OCU
According to the study, individuals can save around 1.056 euros a year by choosing a more affordable supermarket. So, if you wish to be among those individuals, I’d recommend you check out the shops we listed and compare them for yourself.
