Asking for a coffee in Malaga isn’t as simple as you might think

Are you someone who needs a daily dose of caffeine and is traveling or staying in Malaga? I am afraid to say that ordering coffee in this vibrant city of Malaga is not that simple. Back in the 20th century, local cafes in Malaga began to have their own social hubs. This led to each coffee shop having its own special blend and preparation method. This is how the distinct coffee varieties and unique names emerged not only in Malaga but also in other cities in Spain.

Too many foreign words in the menu

While taking a stroll in the beautiful center of Malaga, whether it is winter or summer, you might crave a cup of coffee. The thing is, when you enter a coffee shop, you might be surprised by the unfamiliar names on the menu. Words like “un nublado” and “un cortado” might confuse you. However, do not worry, as we have got you covered.

Let’s break it down

If you are a purist who prefers no milk in their coffee, Cafe Solo is your way to go. Think about an Italian espresso, cafe solo is the strong classic concentrated caffeine. This is the perfect choice for a quick boost of energy.

If you are not the biggest fan of strong shots, cafe long black would be the milder version you are looking for. It is similar to an Americano and it’s ideal for those who wish for a less intense coffee.

On the other hand, if you ask for “cafe con leche” which literally means coffee with milk you might not get what you expect. Cafe con leche here is a half-and-half mixture of coffee and milk. Surprisingly, cafĂ© con leche is the most popular coffee type among both locals and visitors.

If you are someone like me who prefers a tad bit more milk, i recommend you go for a “sombra”. Somehow similar to a flat white, this coffee contains 80% milk and 20% coffee.
