So you have just moved to Malaga or maybe thinking about moving here? In this article, we’ll provide you with a comprehensive guide on how to get around Malaga.
Walking
One of the best ways to explore the city is on foot. Malaga is a compact city, and most of the major attractions are located in the city center. Walking allows you to appreciate the city’s rich culture and architectural heritage up close. Besides, it’s an excellent way to exercise while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Most of the city center can be accessed within 10-20 minutes walking distance. If you live in the historic center, you will rarely need other transportation.
Biking
If walking is not your cup of tea, biking is an excellent alternative. The city used to have a bike-sharing program called “Malaga Bici” but it has been shut down as of 2022. Your best bet would be to get a used bike from wallapop.com (second hand) or cash converters (pawn shop). Cash converters will even give you a decent warranty. Even if you are here for a shorter period you could resell your bike to cash converters for example, before leaving. There are also some rent by the minute electric bikes from DOTT but most of these are hardly ever cheaper than an uber or taxi. Simply just better to get your own. There is a reasonable amount of bike paths (especially around the coast) and many lanes in the city have “light traffic priority” – even if not a specific bike lane.
Public transport
Malaga has an extensive public transportation system that includes buses and trains. The city’s bus network is efficient and affordable, with frequent services connecting most parts of the city. The EMT (Empresa Malagueña de Transportes) operates most of the city’s bus services. You can purchase bus tickets from vending machines, kiosks, or directly from the bus driver. Since 2023 you can now buy bus tickets easily on the bus, with common credit cards such as VISA – for 1.40€ Take note that you can NOT change buses with this ticket. You have to buy a new ticket for each bus. Although, you are allowed to change bus on “1 trip” if you get the rechargeable multi trip card,
You can also get cheaper trips with the rechargeable multi trip card or monthly card. (4.20€ for 10 trips) It can be purchased and recharged from the EMT office, the kiosk in the centre of the Alameda and many Estancos (Tobacconists) – which are sometimes hard to find open at the time you need them.
The city also has a modern metro system that connects the city center with the suburbs. The metro is a quick and convenient way to get around the city, especially during rush hour. If you plan to use public transportation frequently, we recommend purchasing a “Tarjeta del Consorcio” card. The card provides discounts and allows you to use all public transportation services within the city.
Electric Scooters for getting around Malaga?
Obviously they are everywhere now, but are they worth it? Electric scooters have become increasingly popular in Malaga, and several companies offer rental services. Electric scooters are a convenient and fun way to get around the city. Currently there are many limitations to where you can park them, and you can’t ride them in the historical center. They could be okay for occasional use, or when you have visitors. Just remember if you are more than 1 person, a taxi could be more affordable.
Taxis and Ubers
Taxis are readily available in Malaga, and they’re an excellent way to get around the city, especially if you’re in a hurry. Taxi fares are affordable, and you can flag down a taxi on the street or book one through a taxi app. It’s worth noting that taxi fares are higher at night or on public holidays. Uber’s can be 10-20% cheaper. Most 10 minute rides will cost you around 6€. Keep in mind that these prices tend to end up being at least competitive with electric scooters and bikes.
Renting a car for getting around Malaga?
If you’re planning to explore the city’s outskirts or visit neighboring towns, renting a car is a good option. The city has several car rental companies that offer affordable rates. However, driving in the city center can be challenging, especially during peak hours. We recommend familiarizing yourself with the city’s traffic rules and regulations before renting a car. One peer-to-peer car renting system is amovens.com (think of AirBNB for cars). I’ve only had good and cheap experiences with this service.
In conclusion, getting around Malaga is easy and convenient, thanks to the city’s well-developed transportation system. Walking and biking are excellent options for exploring the city’s rich cultural heritage. Public transportation is affordable and efficient, while taxis and car rentals are good alternatives if you’re in a hurry or planning to explore the outskirts. Lastly, electric scooters are a fun and eco-friendly way to get around the city.
