La Pollinica marks the start of Semana Santa

With Palm Sunday, Málaga’s most important event of the year begins: Semana Santa. From early morning, the city fills with atmosphere as the first major processions take to the streets, marking the start of this deeply rooted tradition.

One of the highlights of the day is the procession of La Pollinica – a particularly joyful and vibrant procession that commemorates Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. Its main throne, showing Jesus riding a donkey, is one of the most recognizable images of Palm Sunday and draws large crowds every year.

This day is also special because Málaga’s most famous actor, Antonio Banderas, traditionally takes part in the celebrations. A devoted supporter of Semana Santa, he joins his brotherhood, Lágrimas y Favores de Fusionadas, and walks in their Palm Sunday procession.

Good to know: Due to the processions, many streets across the city will be closed, so it’s best to plan your routes in advance. If you want to follow the processions in real time, you can check updates on the Diario Sur Instagram page or download the app El Penitente to see exactly where each procession is at any moment.
