Feria de Málaga 2025 started with a historic parade, a spectacular drone light show, and a breathtaking 20-minute fireworks display over the bay. Here’s what the opening night was like and why this festival is a must-see in August.

The Start of Málaga’s Biggest Festival
The Feria de Málaga 2025 officially kicked off on August 16th, running until the 23rd, blending Andalusian tradition with a modern urban fiesta. During the day, the city center—especially Calle Larios—comes alive with music, flamenco, verdiales folk performances, tapas tastings, and plenty of the famous Cartojal wine. By night, the celebrations shift to the Recinto Ferial in Cortijo de Torres, where over 100 casetas host live concerts, dance, food, and entertainment.
This year’s highlights include the chance to walk beneath the illuminated portada, glowing with 1.4 million LED lights, more than 200 free performances (featuring artists such as Chambao and Camela), dedicated family areas, equestrian shows, and the traditional feria taurina with bullfights and rejoneo.
A Historic Parade to Begin the Celebrations
Although the official opening date was August 16th, the city’s festivities actually began the night before with the traditional historical parade. This reenactment recalls the events of 1487, when the Catholic Monarchs took control of Málaga.
Key moments included the presentation of the city’s keys and the raising of the flag, both met with enthusiastic applause from the crowds lining the streets. Participants dressed in period costumes—warriors, noble ladies, and standard bearers—filled the city with medieval flair, accompanied by the sound of drums and trumpets that created an authentic atmosphere in the heart of Málaga.
Drones, Lights, and Fireworks Over the Bay
After the parade, the focus of the night moved to the seafront. And when I say the city moved, I mean it literally—the beaches and port area were packed with thousands of people eager to witness the spectacle.
Ten minutes before midnight, the skies lit up with dozens of synchronized drones, painting shapes and animations above the harbor. The drones formed symbols of Málaga, Andalusian traditions, and even abstract light art. Their glowing movements were followed by cheers and applause from the audience.
Then, at the stroke of midnight, the fireworks began. For twenty minutes, more than 6,000 pyrotechnic effects exploded over the bay, perfectly timed to a mix of classic international hits and Spanish songs. From Cher to Marisol, Sergio Dalma, and Pablo Alborán, each piece of music had its own light and color display reflected in the water of the port.
As an expat living in Málaga, I was completely captivated—I couldn’t help but join in the shouts and applause that celebrated this unforgettable opening.
Setting the Tone for the Week Ahead
That night of history, light, and music marked the true beginning of Feria de Málaga 2025, setting the rhythm for a week when the entire city vibrates with celebration.
The best part? This was just the start. With so many performances, activities, and traditions still to come, I can’t wait to see what the following days of the feria will bring. If you’re in Málaga during this time, make sure to join in—you won’t regret it.
