Malaga under red alert: extreme weather precautions for 14th of November as well

Malaga and the Costa del Sol are under a red alert as a severe weather system today 13/11 and tomorrow 14/11.

Last night, the Civil Protection issued an alarm to the entire Malaga community.

The DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) is expected to brings intense rain, strong winds, and significant flooding risks to the area.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has warned that rainfall could exceed 100 liters per square meter in regions such as the Costa del Sol, the Guadalhorce Valley, and Antequera, resulting in hazardous conditions and disruptions across the region.

Rain may continue through Saturday, but the heaviest days will probably be today (Wednesday) and  tomorrow (Thursday).

Precautions for residents and visitors

Residents and travelers in Malaga are urged to follow safety precautions to protect themselves and their property. Due to the risk of flash flooding, authorities advise people to stay indoors as much as possible, especially those living in flood-prone neighborhoods. Non-essential travel should be avoided since roads in affected areas may become submerged, slick, or impassable. Coastal areas face additional threats, with high waves and rough seas that could damage infrastructure and increase danger near shorelines.

In preparation for possible evacuations, residents in high-risk zones should create an emergency plan, prepare a basic emergency kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, and medications, and ensure that valuable items and critical documents are stored in a safe, elevated location. Pet owners should also gather necessary items for their animals in case relocation becomes necessary.

Community and infrastructure impact

Public spaces such as parks and, potentially, schools may close if conditions worsen. Local authorities and emergency response teams are on high alert to manage any incidents arising from this extreme weather. Málaga Airport remains operational, but delays are possible as floodwaters approach, and travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updates. Authorities have prepared additional medical and emergency services in anticipation of potential accidents and medical needs, including provisions for rapid response to any significant flooding.

Staying informed and updated

Authorities encourage residents to remain informed by following real-time updates from AEMET and local news outlets, which will issue any new warnings or evacuation notices as necessary. The red alert will continue through Thursday morning, with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and significant flooding risks persisting. By taking these precautions, residents and visitors can better safeguard themselves and support emergency services in minimizing potential hazards during this period of extreme weather.
