Film Sessions by museum Jorge Rando Malaga

Cineforum is a project by the Jorge Rando Museum that promotes the main educational goal of the cultural space in an interdisciplinary manner. Rando’s team, along with Paco Casado, the museum’s film coordinator in charge, organizes these monthly rendezvous or Film Sessions, as they like to call them. These sessions feature exemplary directors who incorporate elements in their work that can easily be traced back to expressionism.

The Film Sessions

Last month, on May 24th, there was a screening of the film “Cuento de Primavera” by Eric Rohmer. The famous director’s irony and extensive philosophizing, all enclosed within a neat package of exaggerated, dialogue-based cinema, are qualities closely resembling the handle the Expressionists had over their dramatic and emotional themes.

The Film of June:

A Man Escaped (1956) – Robert Bresson (French. 100 min)

The details: Friday, 14/06 at 6:00 p.m.

Synopsis: Lyon, 1943. During the occupation of France in World War II, Lieutenant Fontaine is captured by the German army. Following a failed attempt to flee the convoy transporting him to prison, he is incarcerated and quickly sentenced to death. Unwavering, Fontaine dedicates his time in prison to meticulously planning his escape, utilizing his hands and the limited tools afforded by his sparse cell and fortuity.

The Museum

Located at Calle Cruz del Molinillo, 12, around the Capuchinos area. This cultural space, found in an urban suburb which upholds a lot of charm, is one of the very few museums that still hold a permanent free-access policy to all of their exhibitions and events. Making them super inclusive, welcoming literally everyone who wants to enjoy the art. The modern building, which houses this movement-specific endeavor, has an interesting origin story. Not only is the museum next to Monasterio de las Mercedarias, but it was also “built out of it”. Meaning that some part of the monastery facilities was transformed by architect José Antonio González Vargas, into what the museum space is today.
