During the Andalusia day on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, an unexpected guest made an appearance. As a closing act, they projected an image of the famous Pokemon with Andalusian colours on screen. This all happened at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla.
What is Andalusia Day?
In Spanish, Día de Andalucia is a regional holiday celebrated within the community of Andalusia. It celebrates the day Andalusians voted for a referendum on February 28, 1980. They voted for Andalusia to become an autonomous community within Spain. The holiday is celebrated with festivities, food, and cultural events that honor Andalusia’s rich heritage and history. Although primarily observed in Andalusia, it garners attention all across Spain on social media. Spanish people show their love for the beautiful Andalusia online.
Now, fast forward to Andalusia in 2024. During the gala at the Teatro de la Maestranza, awards were given to some awesome Andalusians. After that, Pablo Lopez filled the air with a sense of grandeur by singing the national anthem with a piano play. No one would have thought at that moment that suddenly their favourite pokemon would make an appearance.
The hostess of this year’s gala, Eva González, lightened the shock with humour. She casually made a joke about being acquainted with that Pokemon, mentioning that her son loves it. But for Andalusians and Spanish people in general, it’s not just about the appearance but rather the memes about it.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, other pokemon, such as Jigglypuff, joined in on the fun by singing the national anthem of Andalusia. Tragabuche, the known character of Bandolero, was used to make memes showcasing his punches, aimed at those who messed with Andalusia. There were also old but gold memes that resurfaced. The famous cat doing flamenco while its owner sings is all over the internet with Andalusia hashtags.
Thanks to this unexpected but appreciated dragonite and performers. Andalusia Day 2024 is now one for the books.
